* How can Decartes go from a imperfect person being able to have knowledge and certainty?

* Descartes says that false beliefs are due to the misuse of free will.

to explain the apparent contradiction between lines #1 and #4 of the following train of thought: 1.God is not a deceiver
2.God made the world
3.I am sometimes deceived

4. God is a deceiver

is that how we are sometimes deciveid is from our own false beliefs that are of our own free will, so God is not responsible for us being deciveid because it is our own choice.

*ignorance vs stupidity

ignorance: when you don't know something you should know i.e. the name of the vice president. (this would also be called "sin of omission")

stupidity: bad judgement i.e. beleiveing that there is a sun within our earth.(this would be called "sin of commission")

* Restrict beliefs to those "clear and distinct"

with certainty you can solve in one step the following: 2+2=4 or 4+3=7
This falls under "intuition": know something to be true in one step.

This falls under "deduction":know something to be true using several steps.

Both intuition and deduction are A PRIORI.

Axioms(basic principles)-> Then you would build off of this Axiom. With each step after you would do in certainty and this is how you can find certainty in more complexes things.

Sum up:

I exist.
God is good.
God is no deceiver.
I am deceived.
I am the source of my own deception- by the misuse of my own free will.

However, if God is not a deceiver, he has to grantee knowledge to those who form their beliefs correctly.

If you form your beliefs correctly than you will have knowledge.

Objections:

Descartes is attempting to prove the more certain by the less certain.

To Descartes God is more certain than your hand in front of your face.
(because Descartes is a rationalist- knowledge comes primarily through reason, not the senses.)..so, Descates would disagree with the people who relay on their senses.
