Volitionism is free will with regard to beliefs.
Descriptive volitionism-it is psychologicaly possible to form a belief through an act of will. (to weigh the evidence and form beliefs in a direction based on desires)
Perscriptive volitionism-it is not only possible but also justified to form a belief through free will. (assumes a normative theory of justification)(is rational and moral)
Is it possible to be truely objective?
Is this something we should strive for?
Kievegaard states that it is neither possible nor desirable to escape subjectivity.
Clifford states that it is both possible and desirable to do so.
Is bias bad? What of hidden bias?
Phenomenological arguement against descriptive volitionalism-our experience of belief is of something that happens to us, not something we intentionally chose to do.
Logical arguement against descriptive volitionalism-"I believe in P only because I want P to be true". A statement in this form is contradictory, you cease to believe in "P" when you admit that you have no objective reason for it, only a desire for it.
