Example of innateness: a human embryo
The human embryo has everything it needs to become full. Descartes says this of human intellect which already has the capacity of math, science, etc. from birth.

Locke uses Tabula Rasa-blank slate or white paper written on by sense experience.
Locke ideas on development begin with simple sensations, then move to compare various objects, notice commonalities and differences.

All ideas come from experience such as abstract concepts, principle of non-contraction, equality and justice.

Morality a learned behavior?
Descartes would say no, Locke would answer yes

Locke ideas of Sensation-5 senses (see handout)- perception of external world
Ideas of Reflection-from inner sensation directed at our own minds. "The mind reflection on it's own operations"

How then do we get concepts like mind, "I", "me", thought, will, doubt, etc. which are all mental concepts?
Ideas represent reality. Complex ideas are things/substances. Simple ideas represent qualities such as the shape, sound or feel of cat (purring, furriness, meow)
