III. Staff Performance Objectives
A. Faculty members:
1. The faculty member shall provide high quality instruction by use of, but not limited to, the following:
a. establishing, assessing, and revising class objectives, and selecting specific class content consistent with students' educational needs, state approved content requirements, and division content requirements;
b. selecting instructional approaches, methods, and materials suitable to the class content and objectives;
c. establishing criteria, procedures, and instruments for assessing student performance and progress in subject matter mastery;
d. recommending acquisition of library, audio-visual, and other materials and equipment pertinent to the instructional area;
e. maintaining instructional equipment and supplies in as good condition as possible, consistent with student learning;
f. establishing and maintaining a schedule of office hours to be available to students for individual assistance;
g. preparing for class activities;
h. conducting scheduled classes;
I. distributing to students, each term, written course information sheets, and placing copies of these in division files;
j. advising students of procedures to be used for evaluating their progress;
k. providing varied opportunities for students to demonstrate subject matter mastery;
l. evaluating student efforts, maintaining records of student progress, and providing necessary feedback to students regarding their performance;
m. assigning and reporting student academic ratings for course work;
n. allowing students freedom of expression in the classroom regarding course content;
o. professionally handling course content so that students may be made aware of differing views;
p. remaining current with information and development in his/her professional field and in the art of teaching;
q. following instructor evaluation procedures as established by the college and by collective bargaining agreements;
r. being aware of college counseling specialists and other available aids to students, making referrals to appropriate personnel in instances in which the instructor feels such referral would be of benefit to the student;
s. attempting to resolve differences with students and, if unable to resolve such differences, advising students of the appropriate channels through which they may seek resolution;
t. advising students of college and division policy as necessary.
u. participate in college and division committees, conduct projects assigned by immediate supervisor, and other responsibilities when such participation does not conflict with division assignments or activities or regularly assigned work loads, as outlined in college operating procedures.
v. responsibly manage materials and services, ICP and other assigned funds.
2. In addition to the foregoing, Science Division faculty who teach courses in professional-technical programs shall
a. maintain an active and continuing contact with the professional/technical field;
b. incorporate in the class content any major technical progress in the professional/technical field;
c. counsel all interested students in the details of the professional/technical field;
d. help organize, and be prepared to become the executive secretary for, an active advisory committee;
e. establish criteria and procedures for assessing student performance and progress toward employability in the professional/technical field;
f. assist students with extracurricular activities relating to the professional/technical field;
g. keep abreast of employment possibilities, to help students obtain jobs.
3. To facilitate division operation, the faculty member shall, within the scope of college policies and procedures
a. be aware of, adhere to, and assist in the development and evaluation of division policies and procedures and activities necessary to implement them;
b. attend division meetings, as required;
c. provide requested information and reports promptly;
d. assist and consult with division members;
e contribute new ideas for division study and evaluation.
f. provide leadership in program development and coordination and contribute to the growth of a collaborative, cooperative division governance system.
B. Support Staff:
1. The primary function of support staff is to facilitate instruction.
2. Support Staff shall, within the scope of college policies and procedures, participate in division activities by
a. adhering to and assisting in the development and evaluation of division policies and procedures and activities necessary to implement them;
b. attending division meetings;
c. providing requested information and reports promptly;
d. assisting and consulting with division members;
e. contributing new ideas for division study and evaluation;
f. participating in other division activities when requested, when such participation does not conflict with the employee's primary assignment.
3. Support Staff shall participate in college-wide activities by
a. adhering to college policies and procedures;
b. following appropriate communication channels;
c. participating in college committees as requested, when such participation does not conflict with division assignments or activities or regularly assigned work loads.
d. taking advantage of professional growth opportunities.
4. The office support staff shall
a. establish deadlines and priorities for faculty work orders, subject to modification by and appeal to the division chair or SAC;
b. manage the Science Division workroom, and other appropriate office spaces.
5. The stockroom Instructional Specialist(s) shall
a. maintain the stockroom(s) and inventory lists in a manner by which division members can locate materials;
b. maintain, for safety purposes, a reasonably orderly stockroom;
c. establish with division chair and SAC approval, a general deadline of one week advance notice for faculty work orders; late requests may be prioritized at the specialist's discretion.
6. The Resource Center Instructional Specialist shall
a. maintain the Resource Center under guidelines established by SAC.
b. maintain, for safety purposes, a reasonably orderly Resource Center
7. The Laboratory Coordinator shall
a. coordinate activities in the science labs
b. procure and transfer materials, services and facilities necessary for science instruction
c. ensure compliance with federal and state regulations to provide a safe operation
d. perform duties as member of the division safety committee
e. manage petty cash for the division
f. assist the division chair in accounting for expenditures in the lab areas
g. assume responsibility for the repair or replacement of instructional equipment when necessary
C. The division chair shall have responsibility for the following, but may designate duties as appropriate to the task.
1. The division chair shall insure communication within the division, college, other institutions and the general public by
a. providing opportunity for those division members affected to be involved in the decision-making process;
b. developing and maintaining appropriate procedures for efficient distribution of information within the division;
c. facilitating the orientation of staff members regarding policies, procedures, and communication channels of the division and the college;
d. using principles of mediation to resolve conflict between staff members, between staff members and students, and between staff members and the college administration;
e. encouraging and facilitating broad-based staff participation on division and college committees;
f. serving as the official division advocate to the college administration;
g. being ex-officio a member of all division standing committees;
h. maintaining liaison with other institutions, organizations and community agencies;
I. cooperating with appropriate college offices in distributing to the general public information regarding the college and the Science Division;
j. involving appropriate faculty members with regard to the evaluation of support staff members.
2. The division chair shall assess and develop division curriculum by
a. evaluating curriculum in terms of:
1) student needs (by reviewing student characteristics and educational and occupational trends);
2) community needs;
3) college policies and requirements;
4) state requirements (keeping SAC informed of changes in these requirements);
5) transferability of classes to other state institutions.
b. assisting the staff in making course and curriculum revisions;
c. coordinating the use of curriculum development funds for division curriculum projects;
d. performing other curriculum-related activities developed jointly by the division chair, division members, and appropriate vice president.
3. The division chair shall facilitate instructional activities within the division by
a. performing duties as the chair to the Science Advisory Committee
b. approving drafts of class schedules submitted by SAC and making teaching assignments, taking into consideration faculty members' preferences and skills, and college work load policies;
c. approving office allocations;
d. coordinating instructor textbook requests and forwarding orders to the college bookstore;
e. conducting the comprehensive evaluations of teaching within the division;
f. facilitating performance evaluations each year;
g. providing instructional materials and staff assistance to division instructors;
h. encouraging and facilitating innovation within the division;
I. performing other instruction-related activities requested by the SAC, division members, or Vice President.
4. The division chair shall provide for effective utilization of division facilities and equipment by
a. aiding in the formation of division policies relating to the use of facilities and equipment;
b. cooperating with all division members in identifying division needs and establishing priorities for materials, equipment, and facilities;
c. arranging for the purchase of materials, equipment, and facilities by college procedures;
d. cooperating with the college administration in keeping an adequate inventory of facilities and equipment nominally under Science Division control;
e. evaluating all plans for the use of division facilities, to insure that any proposed use will not make the facilities inadequate for division instructional activities;
f. aiding appropriate personnel in ensuring adequate security for facilities and equipment;
g. reporting to appropriate officers any thefts or damages to facilities or equipment;
h. requesting necessary repair or replacement of facilities or equipment;
I. cooperating with all college divisions in joint use of facilities, equipment and the LCC forest;
j. participating in the formation of plans for new facilities or the remodeling of existing facilities within the division, or of other facilities that affect the division's programs;
k. maintaining the system for coordinating the use of division equipment;
l. aiding maintenance staff in ensuring adequate care and maintenance of division facilities and equipment;
m. coordinating donations to the LCC foundation made on behalf of the Science Division;
n. performing other facilities and equipment-related activities developed jointly by the division chair, division members, and appropriate vice president.
5. The division chair shall prepare division budgets by
a. developing and/or obtaining from college sources the statistical information and analyses necessary for preparing the division budget request;
b. apprising the division members of budgetary time-lines and constraints;
c. utilizing the assistance of the division members and SAC in preparing, submitting, and justifying the division budget requests;
d. submitting the budget requests, with all required supporting data, to the college administration in a timely manner;
e. analyzing the budget request with the vice president, making available to division members information regarding any changes in the request and reasons for such changes;
f. providing to other offices of the college the division information necessary for college-wide budget development and management;
g. performing other budget-related activities developed jointly by the division chair, division members, and appropriate vice president.
6. The division chair shall provide adequate records management within the division by
a. supervising budget expenditures as outlined elsewhere in this manual;
b. submitting reports promptly;
c. maintaining files of course outlines, course objectives, and student grades;
d. cooperating with the college archivist in preserving pertinent records;
e. performing other records-related activities developed jointly by the division chair, division members, and appropriate vice president.
7. The division chair shall recommend personnel actions within the division by
a. following college procedures for hiring, being sure to meet the affirmative action standards required by the federal government and the fair employment standards required by the state and federal agencies;
b. following evaluation procedures for division staff as established by the college and by collective bargaining agreements;
c. using grievance procedures as established by collective bargaining agreements;
d. appointing screening committees for hiring new Science Division staff members;
e. performing other personnel-related activities developed jointly by the division chair, division members, and appropriate vice president.
