Heather,
 I've got to agree with you. I, too, was placed in the more advanced classes, and it was a stigma until about the 11th grade. Tracking could work if the idea of the lower tracks were to catch the kids up to the higher track. Ideally, by the time they all graduate, they're all at the same level.
