I definitly agree that soap operas promote the status quo. They encourage viewers to root for and like only the characters who display and reinforce certain values that society also values. Also, almost all of the virtuous characters portray themselves as sucessful, educated, and most importantly wealthy. Many of the villians or charcters that the audience is supposed to dislike are from poor or disfunctional families. Soap operas are just one of the many television shows that promote the status quo.
