1. The mass media does not equally represent women. They are consistently left behind statistically in the work force, the actually words of the news, and in representation of the media. Even prime time television is emphasized with mainly male characters, only 37 percent of prime time characters are women. Commercials focus on the traditional role the women plays as a housewife, combining it with the idea of women in the workforce. This suggests that women should still attain their status as a housewife in addition to juggling their career. However, in the past decade, television has improved drastically in the respect of the portrayal of working women. Often these women are depicted as very strong and intelligent individuals. I think that the media has made incredible leaps in the portrayal of women. Of course, there is always room for improvement and the equality and equal representation of women with continue to progress as our society progresses.
2.Advertising is often directed specifically toward women. Now that women have careers and are recognized in the work force, they are often the money managers in the family unit as well. This has created an advertising industry that is extremely attentive to the female audience. However, they advertise to the do-it-all woman. They suggest that women should juggle both career and the stereotypical role of the housewife. Cleaning products are almost never marketed toward the male audience. Many such items are broadcast with these ideas in mind.
