1.influence of Greco-Roman and Egyptian paganism-goddess worship, virgin goddess w/ sons-result of falling out of Jewish element.
2.Development of Jesus and his divinity- made him seem remote
-people couldn't relate to- humanity de-emphasized.
3.Ascetic Monastic emphasis on celibacy- perpetual virginity.

immaculate conception- Mary taken bodily into heaven-born w/o sin herself.
(mother of the savior has to be sinless in order for the savior to be sinless.)
