Mystery Religions:<br>
1)Secret ceremonies, initiation rights-impart gnosis (hot to become one with the god).<br>
2)Worship of male/female deity pairs (emphasis on female) ex. Isis and Osirus (Egyptian), Cybele and Attis (Roman).<br>
3) Story of deity dying and returning to life<br>
4) Fertility association-cycle of death and rebirth in nature, especially plants- has mystical/symbolic significance.<br>

Caveman days (Ice Age): hunter/gatherer clans<br>
<br>
*Animism: worship of spirits in nature<br>
*Polytheism: worship of pantheon of gods<br>
*Agriculture:<br>
    -people settled down and formed cities<br>
    -stratified culture<br>
    -social class<br>
    -division of labor<br>
<br>
Argument: (started by James Frazer, "The Golden Bough") one of the first studies of basic religions suggests: Christian myth of Jesus death and resurrection and sacraments of baptism and communion, came from pagan mystery religions.<br>
