1 Samuel chapter 28 Saul in deep trouble wants an old woman to bring up the dead Samuel so that Samuel. There is not thought to be an afterlife in the early Biblical Judaism (2000 – 400 b c.) with the possible exception of Daniel 12.
The dead are unconscious at rest in the grave (Sheol) the only ones taken up into Heaven are Eoch and Elijah.
Saul does not get any help from Samuel when he was raised. Saul commits suicide by falling on his sword to avoid torture, and humiliation by the Philistines. Saul is cremated while most bodies ordinarily are buried.
A man in 2nd Samual says he killed Saul but it is a made up story and he is killed on the spot.

David – “Man after God’s own heart”
- Powerful, charismatic leader

- Promised everlasting dynasty
- Type of the messiah – military leader who would defeat Israel’s enemies and rule over a secure kingdom.
Prophet: person God speaks through to deliver messages (generally to leaders of Israel) Did not have power of king but was very important.
Nathan is King David’s prophet he tells a lamb story
--a rich man takes the pet lamb from a poor man for his dinner, while the rich man has man lambs of his own. David gets angry.
-- Nathan tells David he is the rich man because of his murder of Uriah; by sending him to front lines just so that he, David, could have Uriah’s wife. When David could have any woman he wanted.
