******Hume's criticism of the "self."******


**Bundle metaphor: There is no "self" or "I."

The self is just a bundle of perceptions.


**No thinking thing or substance.
(No distinction between senses)


**We can't go from states of consciousness

to conscious entity or being.


**The senses tell you all information, but

can't tell you that there is a physical

world. If you can't think, then you don't

exist.


**Theatre metaphor: The mind is a theatre

where perceptions perform.


***Is the Bundle metaphor compatible with

the Theatre metaphor?


Cause and Effect:

1.Priority in time- cause precedes effect

2.Contiguity- the 2 objects touch

3. No neccisary connection between events-


**Hume says that while reflecting on the

self, we need to ask, "From what

sense perception is the supposed idea

derived?"


**Perceptions:

1. Sense impressions- vivacious "pictures."

2. Ideas- faint copies of the impression.
