how much do cultural upbringing and personal experiences determine our beliefs?
ex: marriage- polygamy, polyandry, arranged marriages, living together before marriage
ex: political beliefs, dietary, religious

is it ok for us to choose beliefs based on desires (non rational)?
suppose i think being a republican will help my business.
1.can i will myself to become a republican?
2.would it be intellectually honest?
3.would it be ethical?

some people struggle with the belief that they are inadequate. wouldn't they change their belief if they could?
are "iffy" beliefs under our control?

2 arguments against volition (we can will our beliefs)
1.phenomenological argument-
our experience of forming beliefs is something that happens to us, not something we choose to do
2.logical argument-
"i believe that P, but only because i want to" is just as incoherent as "i believe that P, which is false"
