~the gettier problem is a problem for:
a)the correspondence theory of truth
b)the tripartite analysis of knowledge(*)
c)the "relevant alternatives" model of justification
d)the dualist analysis of knowledge
~the tripartite analysis of knowledge:
knowledge is-belief,true,justified
-problem-some tripartite beliefs don't seem intuitively to be knowledge.
~pojman says- the truth of a belief and its justification must be related correctly.
~ways of justifying a belief~
1.belief B is based on A.
2.belief D is based on C which is on b...etc.
~pojman says-this requires a continuous set of beliefs-impossible for a finite mind.
~reply-you don't need a continuous set of beliefs-you just need the possibility
3.coherentism says:If the circle is big enough,it gives justification
4.c-b-a
foundational belief (self justifying)
~Foundationalism
-Foundationalists:Descartes,Aristotle,Plato,
Locke,Berkely,and Hume(?)
-Rationalists-foundation is logic and math
-Empericists-add all things "evident to the
senses"
~To be in foundation (for classical foundationalism):infallible, incorrigible, self evident, indubitable, necessary truths, basic moral beliefs
-A basic belief- A belief in a persons belief system foundation.
- not believed on basis of anther belief.
-properly basic belief-a belief which is justifiably basic -belongs in foundation
-Fallibilism-modern foundationalist idea- some fallible beliefs belong in the foundation.
