* Epistemology: theories of knowledge
(foundation of philosophy)
*sentence-linguistic
belief-mental
proposition-logical
sentences, statements,and beliefs express propositions (true or false, justified or unjustified).
*Truth according to the Correspondence Theory of Truth- Truth is what is, common sense theory of truth
Truth is completely independent of belief or majority.
*relativist- what might be true for me might not be true for you.
Truth=perception/belief
Self-referentially incoherent- solves skepticism problem
belief=knowledge
(1) Are relativists confused skeptics?
(2) Are relativists misguidedly trying to promote tolerance?
(3) Do relativists give up on objective truth(skepticism), but then embrace subjective truth?
*Skeptics- withhold judgement about appearances and you won't end up with false beliefs. Relativists- the appearances are true for you
*Coherence Theory of Truth- truth is true only in the greater truth
*Pragmatic Theory- what's useful is true and what's true is useful/
(+) having correct beliefs isn't most important
(-) person confuses truth and justification
