Coheritism: belief is justified if it coheres with other beliefs a person has (belief system) Knowledge of mutually supporting beliefs, and the justification of any single belief is a function of its role in the system as a whole.
Strange noise in the middle of the night example: At first he thinks he the noise is a burglar, then he wonders if this belief is justifiable, he remembers his cat likes to play at night with a ball, A burglar would make a different noise that the one his hearing, a burglar would make a heavier and more regular noise. Therefore his previous belief that the noise he heard was a burglar is not justifiable.
Coheritism: get data, make hypothesis, revise your hypothesis as you go along (getting more data)
Sherlock Holmes Example: Sherlock finds the best explanation for the data, when you eliminate the impossible whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.
Advantages of Coheritism over Fundamentalism:
1. more in step with our own experience, how we actually justify beliefs in practise.
2. solves regress problem
3. would make it easier to justify religious belief
4. Easier to justify beliefs in general, solution to skepticism
5. In accord with the way science works.
Coheritism: If something coheres with what you've learned through out your life or things you have come to believe as true, you are justified in believing new information if it coheres with what you previously held to be true.
Criticism of Coheritism:
1. Can cause close minded ness, dogmatic attitude, possible to explain away new conflicting evidence by adjusting your belief system. Tendency to reject contrary evidence and accept confirming evidence to your own beliefs. Irrational bias. ex: Clarence Thomas/ Anita Hill, One may support Thomas because of ones own conservative views, like wise one may support Hill because of ones Liberal views, not supporting either candidate because of merit but only supporting them because a particular candidates views align with your own.
2. Impletive objective: no criteria for connecting our beliefs with the external world.
