Berkeley shows us where empiricism leads.
3 ways of attacking Berkeley
1. Attach theological views.
2. Attach rationalist vestiges mind, cause & effect, lead to more skeptical view of Hume
3 Reject empiricism in some way, question empiricist assumptions
Gettier Problem (Chap. 5)
There seem to be some instances of true justified belief which aren't knowledge.
p.82 (Smith's belief) "Jones is the man who will get the job and Jones has 10 coins in his pocket"
above entails
"the man who will get the job has 10 coins in his pocket"
above true justified but not knowledge
Reality: Smith will get the job
Smith has 10 coins in his jacket.
False justified belief entails true, justified belief.
Prof. B owns a porche <--- justified but false
above entails
someone in PHL 202 has a porche
Justification must be in the right way.
Solution 1: Your justification can't be caused by or based on a false belief.
Joan will get the vast majority of frat vote (TO) sorority(TO) and other on campus vote (IF)
entails
Joan will win the election for body president
This belief is still justified and true through based on false belief.
