I Hume and Descartes
A. They believe all analytic truths are a priori this includes logic, math, and definitions.
B. Can you prove through a priori deduction that 1. an external world exists?
2. The world is more than five minutes old?
3. minds other than my own exists?
Hume says "no"
Descartes says "yes"
C. Examples to work with:
1. If we give Descartes God, does his proof of God's existence work?
a. Maybe the Eastern concept of god as beyond good and evil, neither one is true.
b. God allows a lot of suffering, why not a lot of deception?
c. if god exists, he's omnipotent, the concept of omnipotence is contradictory, therefore God does not exists.
Example: Can God make a rock so heavy he can't lift it? This is contradictory.
D. Hume says you can't prove things about reality by playing with concepts (a priori matters of fact)
