Hume:
Causation
1. Priority in Time
2. Contiguity
3. Necessary Connection(cannot verify)
Belief in Necessary Connection comes from psychological condition.
Something is necessity when we can't imagine,or picture in our minds, it being false. (a priori)
We can imagine a cause without its usual effect, therefore the effect is not a necessary result from its cause.
Pavlovs Dog:
Bell rings..........Meat appears
Bell rings..........Meat Appears
" "

Bell Rings..........No Meat
Problems of Induction
Inductive Reasoning-gather evidence & come to a probable conclusion.(All or Nothing)
"Every Swan i've seen so far was white"...All Swans are white.
Deductive Reasoning-The conclusion follows 100% from the premises.(Descartes)
"God is a perfect being, Existence is a perfection"..........God exist.
Hume: Anything less that a 100% certainty is mere guess work.
Criticism: Living life requires induction, even if you don't believe in an external world-need to avoid pain.

Dretske-relevant alternatives argument against skepticism.
Zebra example
- even though we cannot prove(or don't want or need to prove)that the zebras are cleverly disguised Mules, we are entitled to believe they are Zebras.
As long as other alternatives aren't plausible you are justified in your belief.

Contemporary Approach-to go from common sense examples to conclusions about the nature of knowledge.
Burden of Proof according to Dretske is on the skeptic to show particular reasons to doubt common sense beliefs.
Common Sense-Innocent until proven guilty.

How do you define a relevant or plausible alternative?
-majority belief
-should all people count equally?
-all cultures, all individuals?
