If I had the choice as to which economic system to reside under, I would have to say, hands down, it would be Socialist. The emphasis on wealth in this country is leaving a huge percentage of the population living in dire poverty. The top 1% of our population occupies more wealth than the bottom 95% combined. This "every man for himself" attitude is killing the human spirit. People in this sort of economy see little before the importance of money and all that money entails. I am in an anthro class and the concept of cultures that are not centrally focused on money is quite foreign. My partner and I work very hard in order to supply the very basic needs that our family requires. It just seems that the emphasis should be on harmony and quality of life and health, rather than on excessive wealth. I do believe those who take the initiative to better themselves through schooling or advancement should be rewarded...I just don't think that the rewards need to be so great for some while others are dying from lack of medical help or hunger. Don't get me wrong, I do see the functional arguement of the capatalist system, it just seems that it does not have to one extreme or the other, but rather a happy medium. I am raising 2 boys and I pray with all my heart that they will find happiness in wisdom,enrichment and love, rather than in a offensivly large bankroll!
