I don't think that you have to say something new in your research paper. However I do belive that it is good to bring and new ideas to a paper when you are writing it. If you said the same thing every time you wrote a paper and if there was always the same idea you wouldn't have anybody to read your paper after a while because it is just like everybody else's paper. I think that if you bring new ideas then you bring new life into the class and world. If you come up with something original, exciting and interesting then you will grab peoples attention. I know that when I read a paper I like to get a fresh out look on the subject. This gives you new ways to solve problems and allows you to be different from the crowd. A lot of times it is hard to bring a new subject and to be different from everybody else.
