The deficiency theories argue that minorities are deficient in some way that has caused them to remain disadvantaged. The site different causes biological/genetic or cultural, but their "proof" is basically the same. They point out different minorities that have successfully established themselves within a few generations of immigrating, like Jews and Irish. This is contrasting to other races that have been dominated and exploited for centuries for the most part. The problem with the deficiency theories is that they only give one explanation for the continued poverty. They ignore other external causes that could have a signifagant impact on their situation. The deficiency theories put all blame on the minorities. Basically I feel that the for the most part deficiency theories are just a scape goat for the majority to use as an excuse for continued domination of the underserving poor. Although there is some legitimate reason behind the cultural theory, would that culture exist if the disadvantaged didn't live in ghettos?
The Bias theories argue that the majority, or whites more specifically and their prejudice towards minorities is to blame for the minorities continued poverty. There is some truth to this argument, but it still doesn't give enough credit to other causes. Basically it seems to be to narrow of a reasoning for me. But this may be just because I am white and don't feel affected by race, and prejudice.
The theory that I identify with is the structural-discrimination theories, specifically institutional racism. It seems that intentionally or not minorities have remained in a subordinate role because the dominate majority have practiced continued exclusion of them in order to to maintain and expand their wealth, and or position in society. This is a by product of our capitalist society.
