The adjustment class is a special section in the boys' high school designed for emotionally disturbed, or just the problem children. It's kind of a last chance thing when there are attendance and discipline problems. The boys are only required to attend from 9:30-12:30, and as long as they get their assignments done, there are no structured activities that they have to do. They're encouraged to work out and learn martial arts, but are free to take naps, read magazines, or pretty much whatever else they feel like doing.
The Hallway Hangers are probably attracted to it because it is so unstructured. They tend to resist authority, which is why they end up in the class in the first place. There are no expectations for them to live up to, or to fail. The class lets them go on thinking they're not going anywhere in their lives. It's comfortable.
I do not think it's doing them any good to be put in that class. Some people just need to be pushed to do anything good for themselves. If they don't have the encouragement, or anyone to believe that they can make something of themselves, it just won't happen. I think these boys should've been left in the mainstream, disciplined and watched, so they would be pushed to do more. It probably would've done their self-esteem some good, too. But they're being allowed to get away with just enough to make it.
