The hallway hangers (hh) group solidarity is their main problem. Their constant ragging on each other and putting each other down causes them individually to repress their aspirations, feelings and desires and conform to the groups because of fear of being singled out a put down. An example is Stoney expressing his aspirations to own a pizza joint, this was met by laughing and put downs. Another ex. is when they said that someone who gets good grades is some kind of weirdo. By putting the gang and the other members in higher importance than the individual they are only hurting themselves,and I also think that this is the what is meant by communitarian. It is these functions of the group that adversely affect the life chances of the group.
