Thanks Paula, I am very glad that it is all behind me now and although my husband didn't make it, the transplant did give us another year and a half together. :) And yes, I agree with you, at a time when we were already going through so much, the system added to it instead of helped ease the burden. And yes, there are many people like us out there going through the same thing. I had the fortune to meet people from all over the world, not just the states, all going through the same things in varying degrees. For example, there was an elderly couple who spent their whole life savings on this process and only after it was all gone and they had taken out a second mortgage on their home could they get any kind of help. Sad to say, he died. Where did that leave her? With two mortgages she couldn't pay and no money, so suffice it to say she probably ended up losing her house as well as her husband. It is one of those situations where you do what is necessary to try to save the life of someone you love and you pay for it later. It shouldn't be like that. Nobody will understand if they haven't gone through it just how difficult it is and to add more burdens on top of what you are already going through is wrong.
