I think for the most part the changes made to the welfare policies were for the good. There are too many families out there that continue to have children so that they could stay home and collect money. In 1993 in California a family of 5 received 880.00 per month on cash and 325.00 per month in food stamps. This doesn't sound like much until you realize that many of them live in low income or subsidized housing and pay as low as nothing for rent. Boy if I could collect benefits of over 1200 a month and have no real bills to pay! The reform now helps many of these people train for jobs, I believe that this could be a helpful area but maybe if they concentrated more on education instead of lower paying job training their would be a better chance of moving up the ladder instead of barely going from welfare to low paying jobs. Do they put you through college as a dentist instead of a hygienist? I don't believe that society is worse for reducing welfare but I do believe that society could do much more in preparing people for better quality of life more than one step up the social ladder, have we ever had a president who's family was on welfare? I don't believe the 60 month lifetime limit makes much sense because believe it or not some people do hit bottom time and time again, when their 60 months is up where do they go? What happens to their kids? There is a lot going for welfare reform but I believe that we need people that have been there helping make the decisions on the best way to get off!
