Theravada:
-discipline
-requires more sacrifices
-reach nirvana;enlightened
-more of a religion

Mahayana:
-grace,devotion
-reach nirvana and one can chose to be reborn on earth or heavenly realm to help others spiritually (ideal: Bodhisattra)
-more of a philosophy


Dhamma=Dharma:Buddhist "gospel",teaching
-teach to holy people first because it's like planting a seed in fertile soil
-teach to lay people next who are like mediocre field
-teach to people against Buddhist ideas last because they are like a poor field
-Put teachings to where they will be of the most use


-Theravada seen as selfish (finding nirvana for ones self and not helping others)and as not contributing to society because one goes to live in seclusion
-becoming a monk helps others through example; inspire others to do same thing and reach nirvana
-Dhammapada:discussion of virtues of Theravada Buddhism. Presentation of basic beliefs
