-Kant thinks that people are selfish as far as desires are concerned.
-morality is a form of rationality.

-Teleological- having to do with goals, purpose, function, intention. (ex. "meant to be", "animals were put here for us").

-Aristotle:Eudaimonia=human flourishing SUCCESS. (The goal or purpose of human life).
-Virtue Ethics: define morality by the qualities of the ideal person(virtue).

Plants:growing,reproduction,nutrition
Animals:Same as plants plus locomotion
Humans:Same as plants and animals plus locomotion & thinking
man=rational animal

-Success(Eudaimonia)= the life of contemplation(with the qualification that your not hideously deformed, poor, sick, or friendess).

Aristotle asks:
-what were humans meant to do? What are plants meant to do?
-what do humans do- what's their characteristic activity which sets them apart from other things?
-what do humans do best? Rationally?

-The ideal life/success-life of the mind(neccessary but not sufficient)
-(life as an Aristo (ratic philosopher).
-You also need wealth,good looks,friends,health- neccessary but not sufficient.

-Arete=Virtue=Character(habits)trait which leads to success
-moral habits
-Virtues are a mean between extremes
-How do you know where the mean lies in a particular situation?
PRACTICAL JUDGEMENT- Practice is required. Being a good person, comes from trial & error.

-Nietzsche:German Philosopher
-"God is dead"- belief or faith in God is dead: Untenable for the modern age of science(doesn't make sense to modern people).
-Christian morality is dying or died with God-needs to be replaced.

-Ubermench:Superman
-Will to Power=principle fo life itself- to grow, flourish, and dominate.
-life is exploitation

Nietzsche believes there are two kinds of people: Masters and Slaves.
MASTERS are the MINORITY (strength,courage,creativity,individuality)
SLAVES are the MAJORITY
(weakness,cowardice,stupidity,conformity,
religion).

-Supermen live by MASTER morality
