Deontology-”deon means “rule”

The only thing that has intrinsic value is having good will.

* morality is a matter of following a set of exceptionless rules which describe rights and responsibilities (duties)

* motive is important in deontology- motive means doing your duty because it is your duty.

*main motive must be duty( because it is right)

*Having a good will - A good will ( right motive, good intent) is the only thing which is intrinsically good.

Egoism is true in with regard to desire. Morality is motivated by reason-have to do with desire


Motive is everything, important.
* Morality is intuitive or discovered through pure reason(shopkeeper example)

Three Motives of Honesty
1. Direct or natural inclination-be a nice guy, likes being honest.
2. Indirect Inclination-wants to avoid trouble with the law, lost business.
3. Duty- “it’s wrong to cheat customers” (this Kant says is morally praiseworthy)
