criticisms of utilitarianism:
1) too permissive
2) too demanding
3) too difficult to calculate consequences
4) Their is more to life then plesure or happiness

mill's highest and lowest pleasures

higher pleasure is an intellectual cultural (mind,spirit) more valuable
lower pleasure is a physical, blue collar, sex, drinking.....INSTANT GRATIFICATION

5)crass hedonism - mill's highest and lower pleasure
6)how long do you have to wait until you know you have done right? (calculating consequences) Mill's reply is to wait long enough: short time for short things, longer for larger things.

Objections:
1)bourgeois -elistism, Mill is assuming these things are pleasurable.
2)trying to smuggle values other than pleasure into utilitarianism
Knowledge is a value and mill is trying to smuggle it as a pleasure
other examples: art, religion, freedom
"Brave New World" -mustapha Mond is representing utilitarianism
vs. the savage, who is non utilitarianism

Williams objection to Utilitarianism:
William believes that this makes people compromise their integrity

Morality dant require us to participate in evil that good may become.
