This reading can be a little frustrating can't it? I am convinced that there are no answers. It is true that some people are born less fortunate and that they simply do not know how to get ahead in life when everything they try to do breaks them. On the other hand there are people who don't want to work to make themselves better. Cmon now. In Eugene, everywhere you go there is someone with a sign wanting help. Well help yourself then. I am not going to help someone unless they also want to help themselves and strive for a better life. These people are lazy. I guess I cannot say all of them, because some are victims of circumstance. Although there is help out there, people such as vietnam vets have a rough existence. I have always believed that life is what you make of it. You either give in to problems that arrise in your life, or you get off you ass and rise above. On one hand the Indian Caste System is unfortunate. No one should feel lower than the dirt beneath our feet. As a person, I am to admit that I can be very judgemental. I can't help not to think that all people should have equal rights. Woman should have rights to show themselves in public, and have equal right to jobs, etc. On the other hand, life is just that. Life... The world is diverse. Just because we are Americans doesn't mean that we have the right to judge the behavior of another culture. Look at the African Pygmies. In some tribes woman and children are brutally circumsized without being able to have any say. Some take it as a part of their culture. Others are horrified and have to face this part of their culture. I definately think that this sort of mutilation is sickening, but my point is that although we may not agree, it is not our right to judge other customs. Especially to try to change them. Yes, we are lucky to be born in America. So, take advantage of it. No matter what stance a Sociologist takes, there is going to be bias. It is ingrained within us not long after we are born. Can we step outside of ourselves and try to perceive cultural problems on a non-biased level? Maybe to some extent, but we are people. And people have flaws. Unfortunately with this comes the ability to constantly judge and be afraid of anything that is different or that we are not used to.
