The specific role that I currently occupy is my occupation. I am a certified Human Resource Manager. I was certified by an organization that I belong to called The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). It is the goal of a SHRM member to eventually become certified as either a Professional Human Resource Manager, PHR or Senior Professional Human Resource Manager SPHR.
The Internalization of norms in this society are norms that not only demand conduct in the organization but carry through to my conduct at work. We work under a code of ethics not only during our meetings but in our careers as well. The HR society is a very close nit organization. We know everyone and everyone knows us therefore creating the demanding requirements to fulfill the conduct and ethics that is required for this organization. Just a few of the norms that I will share are continuous education, attendance at the monthly meetings, studying for the exam.I did not create these norms, nor did I create the code of ethics. But, I due support them and believe in them.
The exam consists of at least 3 months of serious studying of laws regarding hiring, safety, benefits, labor etc. Once a member has made the decision to take the exam we enroll for a testing period that only occurs twice a year, May or December. The test is a 4 hour long multiple choice test. During this time we are not allowed to leave, look at our books etc.
As I was preparing for my exam it was noted that the last four people from my organization that took the test had passed. It was also noted that the Eugene, Springfield chapter was at 100% for passing the test. Talk about no pressure!!! The test is not a sure thing. The grading is done by a percentage so the risk of failing is great.
The Social rewards come into play once a member passes the exam. When a HR person becomes certified they are allowed to hold chairs in the organization, it's a prestige type of thing. Certified professionals are held with a higher degree of respect. One of the largest reward for this certification is the ability to become hired within a company of your choice. Certification definitely proves that a person has at least learned the art of the profession.
Sanctions for disobeying norms are great. Once a person is certified continuation of education is necessary. Every two years I have to accumulate points in different aspects of the HR field. If I do not achieve these points by attending meetings, creating policies etc. I will loose my certification. One of the largest threats is not performing my job under the code of ethics, if I break the code I am black balled by the organization. I would risk actually being thrown out of the organization. For example if I were to be too friendly to an employee and not friendly enough to another I would be unethical. And, yes the organization would know, especially if my employment was ended because of my actions.

Again, I understand and believe in the society, or I would not belong to it. I feel that my certification and education is valuable to my employer. I even though did not create the norms of the SHRM, I do support them.
