THE CHARACTER OF MUHAMMAD:
- Charisma, diplomatic skills
- Had a temper: didn't like skeptics or his authority being questioned. Didn't like it when people asked him hard questions.
- Plundered caravans, assassinations, reprisals, severe punishments
*Examples of assassinations:
1. Muhayyisa: businessman, aked Muhammad hard questions in Medina
2. Ka'b bin al-ashrat: (jew) spoke against Muhammad, wrote lewd poems about Muslim women
3. A poetist: claimed Muhammad was stealing her father's poetry & putting it in the Koran
- The word "assassin" comes from arabic word "hashashim", a religious sect of muslim hash-smoking assassins.
- Jihad: "Holy War" The war against Allah's enemies (anyone non-muslim; enemies of Islam) to convert people because Muhammad had bad luck doing it nicely.
- Al Bukhar: (Hadith) the greatest deed was to believe in Allah and Muhammad. The next best thing? Participate in Jihad for Allah's cause.
- Superstition. Muhammad was very superstitious. Some examples of this:
1. Snort water through his nose to cleanse himself of demons (pagan practice)
2. Don't eat with your left hand
3. Don't face Mecca when using restroom
4. Don't fall asleep while praying.
5. Want good health? Drink camel pee and milk
6. Angels won't enter your house if dogs are there.
7. Must use odd number of stones after restroom.
- On Sex:
1. Sura 4:3, 4 wife limit. polygamy okay, provided you're able to take care of your wives.
2. Muhammad had up to 11 wives at 1 time
3. Zaynab: (Muhammad's adopted son's wife, his daughter in law through adopted son). He steals son's wife and takes as his own (Sura 33:28-34)
4. Aesha: child bride. 6 years old when Muhammad married her, but he waited until she was 8 to consummate the marriage. He was 53 when he married her, and she was 18 when he died.
- On Women:
1. Muhammad says the majority are in Hell.
2. Their testimony counts as half of a mans.
3. He gave them inheritance, but they only got half of what their brothers got.
4. He banned female infanticide
5. He elevated the status of women. Before him, women's testimony was worthless and they got nothing for inheritance.
