There are two holy cities in Islam Medina and Mecca. Mecca is for Islam what the Vatican is for Catholics.
Some of Islam consider Jearuselem to be a holy city because Muhammad claims to be form Judaism and Christianity.
When he got to Mecca destroyed all the pagan idols.
He killed all the Pagans that were not willing to convert to Islam.
Saved the Christians and the Jews but heavily taxed them if they did not convert.
All had to recognize Allah as the one god.

He had a nasty temper (like most great men)

He did not like sceptics, did not like anyone questioning his authority and knowledge. But yet it says that he told is followers to ask questions. Got frustrated and telling them that Allah hates questions.

Jihad "holy war" was a war against all of Allah's enemy's. Therefore Islam was spread by the sword. Where Christians said love thy neighbor Muhammad said join in the holy war.
