David’s dynasty destroyed and Romans
occupied Israel-rebellion was prohibited
by Romans.

Groups of Jews:

1.) Zealots: Rebels against Rome,
advocated a violent revolution.
2.) Sadducees: Advocated cooperation w/
Romans. Controlled the temple
Solomon built (which was destroyed in 70
A.D). Sadducees made $$ for the
Romans by: making the people pay for
sacrifices, exchange real money for
“temple” currency and having this all set
up in a “flea market” type
atmosphere.
3.) Pharisees: Controlled synagogue
system-grudging cooperation with
Romans,
but not rebellious. Consisted of Rabbis
and focused on the teaching and
study of the Torah.



Jesus disapproved of these groups
because:
Zealots: Didn’t love their enemies.
Sadducees: Too focused around
money and profit.
Pharisees: Too bound to the Torah
and its rules, and lost sight of
peace
and love in the community.
