Identify some aspect of US culture and give both idealist and materialist explanations for it.

The form of American culture that I choose is: Television.

Ideally television would be seen as a form of entertainment and education. Both adults and children would view television for entertainment as well as educational purposes. When I think of it in idealistic terms I imagine television that couldn't be controversial. For example there would be ways to control choose shows based on content. Thus eliminating arguments about violence, language, sexuality, etc.

I suppose the materialistic viewpoint comes in when money is involved. Commercials sell, thus forming in many Americans minds what is socially acceptable. TV tells you what is "cool" to eat, drink, wear, and how to live.

I believe that the materialistic point of view is the most accurate when looking at this form of American culture. Yes, television is used in some households solely for entertainment and education. But I believe most people watching TV are exposed to hours of "hype", that they don't intend on watching. I also believe, television prevents many from other more valuable forms of communication, socialization, etc.

In case you guys are wondering...yes...I do have a TV at home. I don't believe it's all bad. (smile).
