1.Which paradigm do you find more insightful, the order or conflict paradigm?
The conflict paradigm. I think the order paradigm sounds nicer, but the conflict paradigm more accurate of our current situation.
2. Try to identify the strengths of the paradigm you chose above, including the following:
a. Theoretical Arguments: The conflict paradigm explains the current status of our world today. Generally, there are people in power they have money and support. They control society. And then there are those who work for the first group, who have less power and money. Society in almost every aspect is controlled by those that have. For example: In America today the media influences everyone and everything, from presidential candidates to what our children think is “cool”. If the media is owned and operated by those with money and power then the majority of the content on TV, newspapers, etc. will be focused on what the have’s want it to be focused on.
b. Empirical Evidence: What empirical evidence can you offer in support of this paradigm? The numbers of wealthy in America continue to rise and the number of Americans living below the poverty level continue to rise. Thus supporting the theory that inequality rules our world today. “The powerful protect their privileges by supporting the status quo.”
3. Try to identify the weaknesses of the other paradigm:
a. Theoretical Arguments: What theoretical arguments can you offer to oppose this paradigm? I believe there are those with less, who are born with less, who want out of the class they are in. They don’t just stay there because they have similar beliefs, religions, etc. with those in the same class. They stay there because it’s to hard to get out. Or because expectations placed on the individual by society, family, themselves etc. isn’t conducive to positive change.
b. Empirical Evidence: In my opinion society today is in constant upheaval. People are unhappy. We are self medicating, often with the help of our physicians, we are becoming more and more violent-at younger ages, divorce is rising, etc. I believe because of unhappiness on every level. Which would support the Conflict paradigm.
4. Any other points you would make regarding the debate between these paradigms?
This homework was hard for me, because I believe that parts of both paradigms are working right now. I believe neither to be absolutely correct.
