Religions of the West - Extra Credit
The search for God has been a crucially important part of the human story. Because of this central role played by religion, I have decided to add a broad spectrum of religions of the world to my list of extra credit cultural opportunities. Students will be enriched by experiencing religious services outside their own tradition. My hope and expectation is that this will be multiculturalism at its best—sharing and respecting our neighbors’ lives.
I.Extra Credit - Religions of the West (5 points each—see syllabus)
Students can earn 5 points of extra credit for attending each service listed below. Students should respectfully attend the service either as an observer or as a participant and then write a short (one or two pages) summary of the message and a description of your experience. All reviews MUST BE TYPEWRITTEN. These reviews will not be returned—if you want a copy, save it on your computer or make a hard copy. To receive full credit, your essay must have support materials attached (i.e., ticket stubs, programs, church bulletins, etc.) and must be handed in within one week of the event. These reviews do not need to be highly polished papers but they must include enough specific information and details from your experience to be credible. Inadequate papers will earn half credit or no credit.
Important: Arrive at least 5 or 10 minutes before the service begins and stay for the entire service. It is rude to come late or leave early. Always behave reverentially and respectfully.

1.Abu Bakr Islamic Center

(NOTE: Although Islam is not a western faith, its followers are people of the A Book.@ Islam was heavily influenced by Judeo-Christian traditions and it in turn has had a major impact on the Western world.)

Men and women worship separately in separate rooms that have separate entrances. Worshipers stand in awe, bow and prostrate to Almighty God while reciting prayers.@ You should dress conservatively and neither men nor women are allowed to wear shorts. Everyone must remove their shoes inside the Mosque.
2.Bethel Temple Christian Family Center

The Worship Service is lively - we are not a quiet church. Bethel Temple knows how to make a joyful noise onto the Lord! I enjoyed the service enormously. Although the service is long in comparison with most churches, it is certainly not boring. The mostly African-American congregation spent much of the two-hour service engaged in glorious and enthusiastic gospel music. The atmosphere in the lovely new sanctuary was warm and welcoming.
3.Eugene Christian Fellowship

The Eugene Christian Fellowship is a lively church. They enjoy contemporary music with electric guitar, drums, bass, brass, and woodwinds. The dress code is casual but not sensual or revealing. Some would describe the church as charismatic; people get enthused and some talk in tongues.
4. Eugene Faith Center

The Eugene Faith Center is a very large and successful church but in spite of its size it has a warm and welcoming feel. The service is very contemporary with a lot of praise singing and a practical, down-to-earth bible-based sermon. The building is a very modern nonchurchy structure that is very open and comfortable. The dress code is come as you are with some folks dressing up very smartly and some being very casual.

6.First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church has served Eugene for more than 150 years. Today it is a vibrant and growing church. The first two services on Sunday are New Dimension services and the music is geared to young adults and young families (although you will see a few gray heads scattered throughout the audience). The 8:20 a.m. service always has plenty of room; if you choose the 9:40 a.m. service, be sure to arrive a few minutes early—it fills to capacity (about 750 people). The senior pastor is a remarkably gifted teacher as is his back-up or associate pastor. The dress code is come as you are with some wearing suits and some wearing cut-off jeans.
7.First Baptist Church

8. First Church of the Nazarene

First Church of the Nazarene is an old, well-established church west of the downtown business district. The service is traditional and the atmosphere is welcoming.
9.Friends Church

Eugene Friends Church has its roots in Quakerism but has evolved over the generations and is now a normal evangelical church. The service includes music and preaching and occasionally a quiet time for prayer and meditation. They are a very friendly and accepting group.
10.Friends Meeting (Quaker)

The Eugene Friends Meeting is a traditional Quaker service which is to say an hour set aside for silence, prayer, and meditation. In Ohio, I have been to meetings where no one testified and generally only one or two worshipers might give testimony for 30 seconds or a minute. Eugene Meeting is a more talkative group and several worshippers will feel moved to give testimony. Be prepared to sit in reverence and silence for one hour.
11.Garden Way Church

The Garden Way Church is an evangelical Protestant church that describes itself as expressive and non-traditional for a church that is not charismatic by the popular definition. They will do their best to make you welcome without singling you out and making you feel ill at ease. The dress code is "come as you are."
12.Grace Lutheran Church

Grace Lutheran is a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. It is a traditional and conservative Mainstream church. Dress code is come as you are. Grace Lutheran also sponsors and houses Life! Lutheran School.
13.The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon)

This service is for single adults 18 to 30 years old. Mormons use the traditional Christian Bible and in addition they use the Book of Mormon which they believe to be scriptural. The Sacrament meeting (church service) lasts about 70 minutes. If you decide to stay for the 2nd and 3rd part of the service, you can write up parts 2 and 3 (Sunday Schools) and double the number of points earned by attending part one—the Sacramental Meeting. In part three, men and women separate for lessons relating to church duties.
No one should smoke on the grounds of a Mormon Church (or any other house of worship). Communion is generally not taken by non-members.
It is expected that visitors will bring a spirit of kindness and honest investigation.
14.Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon)

Single students between 18 and 30 should go to the center at 768 E. 16th Avenue (see #13). Married students should go to the Ward handiest to their home. For locations look under the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the white pages of the telephone directory. Call the Ward office for times of services. See #13 for general description of programs.

They welcome everyone. A traditional service of songs and a sermon. The Lighthouse Temple sometimes includes baptisms, baby dedications, etc., in their service.

The Nativity of the Mother of God is a beautiful little church a couple of blocks south of Centennial Blvd. The divine liturgy is the Eucharistic service common to the Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Churches. Non-Catholic and non-Orthodox Christians are not able to receive Holy Communion—otherwise all people are welcome to participate according to their abilities and desires.

The Newman Center is the Roman Catholic Church campus branch and many of the parishioners are U of O students. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. Non-Catholics are asked not to receive Communion. However, non-Catholics may come forward if they wish during Holy Communion. They should place their right hand over their heart and the minister will give them a blessing.

19.St. Mary’s Catholic Church

St. Mary’s is a beautiful old church just west of downtown Eugene. You should dress neatly and modestly. Men should not wear caps or hats in the church. Also avoid clothes with slogans, messages or huge brand names. Non-Catholics are asked not to receive Holy Communion.

The Episcopal Church has its roots in the Church of England. There is a liturgical service with music, bible readings, sermon, and Holy Communion. There is some standing, sitting, and kneeling—you can just follow the lead of the parishioners if you are unfamiliar with Episcopalian customs. There is no strict dress code and women are no longer expected to wear a hat.
21.Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Eugene

Child care provided: No. They have a Mothers’ Room which is wired for sound and looks through a window out into the sanctuary.
The Seventh-Day Adventists believe that Saturday is the Sabbath, and they advocate certain dietary restrictions. Other than those two differences, they are much like other evangelical Protestant denominations. The parishioners are very warm and welcoming. There is no strict dress code but you are expected to be clean and neat.

Temple Beth Israel is the spiritual home of most of the Eugene area’s religious Jews. They currently offer various services from traditional conservative to Jewish Renewal. Visitors should behave with decorum as they would in most worship services. They would be glad to have you be their guest.

Wesley Methodist Church is a good example of a suburban Mainline Protestant church. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month. There is no formal dress code but most men wear a tie and most women wear a dress or nice slacks.
