I have been following all the e-mails regarding step increases and agree

that it is time to seriously look at our salaries. We have been losing a lot

of ground for quite a while. This really came to my attention at

Thanksgiving in Los Angeles in a conversation with my sister Rose Peters who

teaches 6-8th grade at a Torrance Middle School. We both have about the

same number of years in teaching, but I have a lot more education for

placement on the salary scale.

About 6 years ago or so we were both at roughly the same schl year salary

of $40,000 (I think we were a little a head of her). In Sept, 2000, she

told me she was sad that her district settled negoiations for a salary

increase that would only give her $70,000 for this school year. In

addition, she makes $1,000 a week during a 6 week summer school for 9-12

p.m, class load and $29.50 per hour for any extra inservice which is a

routine thing for Torrance teachers,. She can teach in the summer every

summer if she chooses. Apparently Rose and the other teachers felt that the

raise was insufficent and are hoping for more the next round. The next day

I said something to my sister-in-law Chris Prengaman, first grade teacher at

El Segundo District, about Rose's salary, and she told me El Segundo's

salary scale was better than Torrance's.

These teachers are worth every penny and more, but at this point I really

realized that LCC has slipped very badly and the faculty needs to

consciously work to change things. To even begin to catch up to others in

public education we need a double step raise.
