Walk up and down Beale. You can start at 3rd/Union, and go up Union to the river, or down 3rd to Beale, up and down Beale, and then back on 2nd to Union. That is the main area. Earnestine & Hazel's on South Main to get a beer and a soulburger (the best hamburger you have ever eaten). When you've finished exploring, head to one of Memphis' most famous historic landmarks, the National Civil Rights Museum and the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. Try to arrive by 11 as you will want to spend at least 2 hours here. The audio tour takes you on an evocative and moving journey through the civil rights movement from the time of slavery to present. Before you leave the museum, walk around back to view the original Lorraine Motel as it was on the fateful day King was assassinated. The deeply moving experience serves as a reminder of the struggle of African Americans and how far both the city of Memphis and the entire nation have come.
