Moodle 1.6 also has a new "student view" button.

Until then, feel free to add the Sample Student to your class.
Click the STUDENTS link in your Admin Block
Choose the Sample Student from the list on the right and add it to your class.

Then, to login as this student, click your PARTICIPANTS link.
Click Sample Student
Click LOGIN AS button

That's it.
To get back to you, click YOUR NAME (Beth Naylor logged in as Sample Student - Logout)

Hi Joe-

I'll think about using the scramble feature. Mine are usually study questions, not actual tests. If it's a test, I do scramble it.

So it seems like my vote would be to go to 1.6 if we could d it AT LEAST 2 weeks before the start of the term.

I think I need to be able to have a student account, like I did with WebCT. I want to see exactly what the first page would like like to them a well as what the mail would look like to them andt o me. Is there a way for me to do that?

I'll look at the link you gave about quesions. I was thinking on the way home that I be it has to do with the astericks you had in some of the answers.

Thanks so much. You are always so helpful.

Beth

Also, it apparently sounds as if question order is of major importance to you. Many faculty are using the setting which tells Moodle to scramble the question order to hinder cheating and to provide the "appearance" of different versions of the test.

Moodle 1.6 DOES HAVE a much easier tool to change question order than what you are using now.

As for your quizzing, Moodle can indeed do question with multiple answers. See the following link on "embedded answers"

http://moodle.lanecc.edu/summer2006/help.php?file=multianswer.html&module=quiz

1.6 won't cause any "re-learning" of Moodle, and the upgrades won't negatively affect any current courses.

On surveys, remember that they "can" be anonymous already if you, as instructor, choose NOT to scrutinize the source of the results that you get.

So again, I'll certainly be pursuing the 1.6 upgrade and will keep you posted.

Joe

Hi Joe-

It depends. How different is 1.6? I REALLY want the anonymous Surveys. It's a big part of the way I've been doing Family Food & Nutrition. But if 1.6 means too much change, I'm not for it. It's been a ton of work figuring out how Moodle works and re-doing the questions that didn't import well and so I'm going to be very grumpy if I have to learn too much new stuff or un-do.

The most annoying problem I'm having is when I create a quiz, but then find a question doesn't work and I have to start over with that question. I had a number of WebCT questions that had more than one correct short answer (Moodle allows only 1 correct short answer as near as I can tell). I have to start over with those.... editing doesn't work.

Let's say it's #10 of a 40-question quiz. With WebCT, when you wanted to add it, you clicked a box beside question #9, and it would add the question there. Moodle doesn't have a box beside the question.... it just adds it at the end. Then you have to click the up arrow, it moves up a question, but the screen returns to the top of the quiz. Then you have to scroll down to the next-to-the-last question, click the up arrow, etc., etc. etc., etc......

My only solution is to remove ALL the questions from the quiz, give numbers to the title of each question, sort them alphabetically, THEN add them to the quiz. Is there an easier way?

Grumpily, Beth

Beth,
I don't know if this will give you what you want, but more importantly, we haven't yet upgraded to 1.6. I'm working with David Walton this Summer and we'll see if we'll go to 1.6 in Fall term or not.

I take it your vote is for YES.

Hi Joe-

From briefly looking at this link you sent me, Joe, it seems there is a "Questionnaire Module" for anonymous surveys on Moodle 1.6. How would I get that?

Beth,
I'm so glad things are going well.

Here is a link I have... Looks like this is moving forward very quickly.

Hi Joe-

I'm making progress with my course and it's not that hard. I'm so glad you were able to make such good copies of my WebCT courses.

Do you still have that link for the discussion about anonymouse (I like that typo) Surveys with Moodle? I didn't save it.

Thanks.

Beth

Hello faculty,

I hope the third week of the term finds you well. This is the second e-mail communication I am sending to all WebCT instructors. An archive of all of these communications can be found at the following web site:

http://teach.lanecc.edu/moodle

In addition, an audio "podcast" version of this email is also located at the above web site. That way, if you would rather not read a lengthy e-mail, you may listen to the same message over the internet through your computer speakers.

For those of you who have contacted me already, had your courses converted to Moodle, or have notified me that you are no longer using WebCT, I thank you. If you are aware that the WebCT server and all courses and files on it, and access to it, will not be possible after September, 2006, you can ignore the rest of this e-mail. I simply want to be sure that no one is left behind.

I want to take this opportunity, to be clearer and more precise than perhaps I was in my first message to you. In that email, I asked that all WebCT instructors contact the WebCT system administrator, David Walton (at webct@lanecc.edu), and let him know the specific filenames of each of your WebCT classes to convert to Moodle. Less than 25% percent of the faculty using WebCT have done this so far. I know that many of you are busy, and that the first announcement came during final exam week last term. But, believe it or not, nearly a month has passed. I am also sure that many of you may have thought that you would not need to do this because you did not teach a WebCT class in the Fall.

Unfortunately, the WebCT server will not be available for any instructor to use, or even the system administrator to access, after September of 2006. Therefore, regardless of what term you offered your WebCT course in the past, you will need to have those course materials saved and that course converted to Moodle before September, and preferably by the end of this term in June. (Once converted to Moodle, your files will be "safe". No one expects you to be a Moodle expert and have your courses in tip top shape by June.)

Of course, some of you may decide not to use a learning management system (LMS) with your future courses. Others may be changing textbook versions and related publisher materials such as test banks and PowerPoints and no longer need their "outdated" courses. Some of you may just want to start from scratch. Regardless, I would like to hear back from each WebCT instructor to be sure that no one is left behind.

I have met with individual instructors and groups of instructors since the announcement of Moodle as the adopted LMS at the end of last term. The faculty webmasters will continue to meet with faculty and offer workshops, advertised both in The Daily and on the faculty web site at:

http://teach.lanecc.edu

With only seven weeks left in the term, the time to get started is now. Although we will be available to help you over the Summer, many faculty would like to avoid any extensive work over the break. And there are some who will be busy teaching courses Summer Term.

I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions in the matter of WebCT to Moodle course conversions for both online courses and web-enhanced traditional courses. Starting in the Fall Term, 2006, Moodle will be the only operational LMS at Lane Community College. To date, the conversions have been very successful, and I hope we can provide that same level of service and satisfaction to all Lane instructors.
