Hi Joe-

Did you have a nice vacation?

What you're suggesting is much like what occurred to me last night and I wa=
s going to email you right away and call you off. But I went to my class t=
o tryy it and saw your new categories. I don't thoroughly get the idea of =
paren categories yet, but I'm sure I will after I fool with it.

Thanks, Joe.

It sounds like you will need to take advantage of the sub-category feature =
with Moodle Quizzes. Take a look at any quiz in your FN230 course.
http://moodle.lanecc.edu/moodle/course/view.php?id=3D246

To illustrate the point, I added a new category called Units 1-3 Joe. I th=
en "moved" your Unit 1, 2, and 3 quiz categories to this "parent" category.=
(Of course, you can move these back to the "top" category again.)

If I wanted to do what you are doing (if I understand you correctly), I wou=
ld make 2 categories per quiz, something like "used for test" and "not used=
for test". I'd add those categories to another "parent" category, somethi=
ng like "quiz 1 all questions".

Of course, all questions in the "quiz 1 all questions" category could be us=
ed for your quiz. Then, you when making your "test", you could be tell Moo=
dle to use a random 4 questions from the quiz 1 "used for test" category. =
Make sense?

This would involve "moving" questions from category to category and some ca=
tegories to new "parent" categories. And, it would avoid the need to expor=
t, import, and duplicate questions.

Hi Joe or Meredith-

I=D5ve been working on my first Exam for my Family Food & Nutrition class. =
In WebCT, I would choose maybe 20 questions from a weekly Unit Quiz, and s=
et the test up so each student would get a different random selection of 4 =
of those 20 questions. Moodle allows a random selection, but it looks to m=
e like it needs to be a random selection from ALL of the questions in a cat=
egory.

For a variety of reasons, I don=D5t test on some of the questions in a cate=
gory. One reason is that they=D5re questions about how the class is set up=
, like a due date question. If I was starting a new class, I would put tho=
se questions in a different category. But that=D5s not how I have the cate=
gories set up.

It occurred to me that maybe I could export those questions (I mostly test =
on M/C questions). Then I could upload them again into a new category. Bu=
t I don=D5t see how to export individual questions. It seems like it will o=
nly export an entire category of questions. And I don=D5t understand the f=
ormat they=D5re in once they=D5re exported. And the Aiken format isn=D5t on=
e of the choices.

Am I making sense?

Thanks for your help.

Beth
