Hi Meredith-

Thanks for enrolling and trying a discussion.

I understand how the subscribing works for a discussion for the whole class, but I'm confused about doing group discussions. During the second week, I divide them into 3 groups. There's a lot of discussion that happens about specific topics and many students don't feel like reading 130 postings every week. So I divide the 40 students into 3 groups. When the week ends, I download the entire discussion and make a document of it. The following week, they're required to SKIM the document of the entire discussion and tell me one thing they learned.

I have put you in the "Raspberry" Group for week 2. Could you go to Week 2, click on the Berry Dinner Conversation there and tell me what you see? If I'm undersanding this, you will see two topics- "parents of..." and "golden rule". You shouldn't see any replies. Our Fake Student has responded, but she's in another group so you shouldn't see those.

Could you post some sort of response? Thanks for your continued help.

Beth

Beth,
1. I enrolled in your class. Use me as student #2.
2. Yes, Members can subscribe to forums - and teachers can force everyone to subscribe when setting up the forum. By subscribing to a forum, participants will receive email copies of each new posting, if they have an enabled email address.
Hope this helps,
Meredith

Hi Meredith or

I'm having a deviil of a time figuring out how to do group discussions for my Family Food & Nutrition class in Moodle.

A while back, Joe told me how to set up groups in the Admin Block. I just started to fool with that this week and I have 2 questions:

#1 Is there a way to get a second Fake Student so I could see what a second discussion would look like? Supposedly, group members only see the discussion for their group and I want to check that out.

#2 I just don't get what some of the settings for the forums mean and the i buttons don't always help. For example, what does Force everyone to be subscribed? mean? Does that mean that the group members are forced to subscribe?

Thanks for your help.

Beth
