Joe,

Please read carefully and without condescension.

The original problem is that one of my forums (Students Only Forum) was showing up in the grade book worth 100 points. I had to get rid of this column. As far as I could see there was no way to manage the columns easily. So I re-categorized everything and was able to eliminate the column and points from the grade book. Then I reset the grade percentages. For most students the grades were ok. But for students who did extra credit, they were not. Example: If two students both got 184 points. One got a A; the one who did the extra credit got a A-. So YES the system WAS including their extra credit in their points possible, IF they did the extra credit.

And YES after 2 degrees, calculus, 16 years of teaching I do know how to calculate percentages.

Incidentally, the original points possible showing was 315 (rather than the 200 it should have). This number also happens to be the total points possible for my course when it was through WebCT. So perhaps this is a conversion issue.

When I reset to the default settings by making everything uncategorized (as you suggested), the Students Only Forum column worth 100 points reappeared. I got rid of the points by unselecting the rating option within the forum itself. I never assigned anything for 100 points, so I do not know what the system is assuming. The Students Only Forum column is still there and I would like to get rid of it so I do not get email questions about it.

You never directly answered my first question. I guess the answer is no. That is fine. But just give me a work around without suggesting that I need to review basic math, please.

To answer your final question: "My final question is that you wrote that the extra credit is INCLUDED in the points POSSIBLE. Is this statement correct? In my understanding, extra credit is always factored into the actual, not possible, points when determining grades."

Yes, I know what extra credit is and how to mathematically calculate it. You would not have had to ask this question if you had read my statement more carefully. Here it is again: " I have used percentages for now, but when a student has done the extra credit, these points are included in the points possible."

Joe, I am just trying to get tech support here. I am new to Moodle and have been using other systems for about seven years. I don't feel like I can ask you questions without getting some grief. Is there a problem? I really don't like being talked to this way.

There are many factors implied in your request.

Which class are you referring to? I've taken a look at your 101.

I assume when you say "set grades", you are talking about the letter grades page with the percentages. I'm sure you know that this is done simply by dividing earned points by the total possible.

I use weighted grades in my courses. I assume you use/want to use straight points? If so, then you've currently got a mix going with weighted categories (including an Extra Credit Category with a 0% weight... therefore the XC does not count).

To do what you want to do, the POINTS, not the weights should be the important numbers. But each of your assignments is 5 points (20 total) and the midterm and final are 90 points each (180 total). Of the 200 points possible in your class, are your exams actually 9 times more important than your assignments? If this is true, then here is your solution.

Have ONE category (the default was called "uncategorized"), make it worth 100% of the grade, change all assignments and exams to that category, and your extra credit, which you have correctly checked (2 possibilities at 10 and 5 points, for 15 points total), will work correctly.

My final question is that you wrote that the extra credit is INCLUDED in the points POSSIBLE. Is this statement correct? In my understanding, extra credit is always factored into the actual, not possible, points when determining grades.

Hi,

I was wondering if there was anyway to set grades using points rather than percentages. I have used percentages for now, but when a student has done the extra credit, these points are included in the points possible. I used Set Weight to set the extra credit assignments to zero, but this is still a problem. Any way to fix this?
Thanks,
