Joe,

Thank you for your awesome answers to my questions about Moodle. With your help, I think I'm slowly beginning to get the hang of how it works. I will definitely try the keyboard editing options you mentioned (and get back to you if I have further questions). And I downloaded Firefox, so that should help Moodle run more smoothly for me.

Thank you again for everything. I may email you again with more questions. I appreciate your patience with all these.

Thanks again!

Jennifer

My answers below your questions

**Question 1** Browser: I'm a Mac user, and I currently use Netscape 7.2 as my browser, which worked well for WebCT and works nicely for GroupWise email, too. However, I see that Firefox is the recommended browser for Moodle, so I plan to download that later today. I have been having some weird problems with my browser crashing repeatedly while I am working on Moodle. I assume this is probably browser-related.

I'm a Mac user, too.

Firefox is the preferred browser at Lane for both faculty and students. It's free. I don't use Netscape 7.2, so that may well be your problem. Let me know if you have any problems after you download and use Firefox.

**Question 2** Cutting and Pasting in Moodle's Compose/Editing Windows: The Cutting and Pasting features that come with Moodle's HTML editor, as well as my browser's editing features (except Copy), are not working for me in Moodle. This is a scary situation for me, since I do a lot of on-site text editing when I am writing documents in my online classes. I am hoping that when I get Firefox, I will be able to follow the commands to enable the cutting and pasting features. (The commands don't seem to apply very well to Mac users, though.) Can you confirm that this is the case and that I will eventually be able to cut and paste in my in-Moodle editing?

Yes, you will be able to cut and paste, without problems, in Moodle. Are you using the EDIT menu and do you know the keyboard shortcuts Apple Key - C and Apple Key -V (for copy and paste)? Start using those. I've run into an instance, every now and then, using OTHER people's computers, Macs and PCs, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc. where the EDIT menu was greyed out, but the keyboard shortcuts DID work.

**Question 3** When I compose texts using the Moodle HTML editor for my Profile and other text areas in Moodle, the line breaks often get screwed up, with short lines intermixed with long ones. Is this normal? If so, is there anything I can do to prevent it?

You say, when you compose texts. I assume you mean you are typing the whole thing into the Moodle HTML editor. I don't know why your text is being formatted strangely. I do strongly prefer to type my stuff in Word or TextEdit then copy and paste the whole thing. I haven't had the kind of formatting problems you speak of.

**Question 4** Moodle Announcements area: According to my notes from our one-on-one Moodle meeting spring term, when I compose a message in the Announcements forum, it goes directly to students' personal email accounts. Is this really true? In other words: I wrote a message in the Announcements area yesterday. Does this mean this message will show up in students' personal email accounts as soon as their names get added into the registration list for the class? (I don't think I really want that to happen . . . )

The answer is, IF you set the Announcements forum that way. Take a look at the Editing Forum page for Announcements and find the Force everyone to be subscribed line. Set it to No if you don't want students to receive an email. Mind you, in order for them to get any of your announcements, they will have to login to Moodle, click the Announcements forum link, and read any new posts you have made. There is no assurance that they are indeed reading your announcements.

And no, since students have not been enrolled yet, they will not receive an email from that forum (if you set force subscription to NO).

A great big, in-advance thank you for your help with these questions.

Your welcome.

Joe
