In theory, it shouldn't be a problem to simply ask them to reassign their child courses. I'm concerned, though, because I've seen a couple of situations where duplicate metacourses were created, by what I presume was an attempt by an instructor to do precisely what you're describing, but two metacourses were created--and the second one was identical to the first (same course ID, same long name, and to all indications, the same short name, which I thought was supposed to be impossible). For that reason, I'm a little reluctant to suggest that teachers do this.

In practice, it may be a non-issue, because most metacourses will be set up by now, at least for the current term. So I may simply have folks get in touch with me if they're running into problems.

David,
I just verified that yes the backup and restore "breaks" the child courses. Buy, I clicked your Metacourses link and easily added the child courses back. So, I don't think we have a major problem here.

Well, I figured out why people's child courses were disappearing from their metacourses.

It happens as a result of the restore. Child course information is wiped out. So having them assign child courses as part of the metacourse creation process is going to cause this problem. I'm not really sure what to do about it.

I'm going to think about what to tell faculty, and whether to leave the existing metacourse management form in place. I'll send out a note to faculty about it.

David
