Sorry I couldn't test this earlier; I got distracted by the latest life-ending crisis with the Macintosh labs.  (Meredith, same excuse for not getting Cecile's courses set up.)

I tested Joe's suggestion, and it worked--no student enrollments, no user accounts.  

One question.  I got this message:

"Notice: You have selected to backup no users ("none"), so all the modules backup have been switched to "without user data" mode. Please note that the "exercise" and "workshop" modules aren't compatible with this type of backup, so they have been deactivated completely."

I do note that we have five people using Workshops in Fall 2006.  Is this going to cause any problems?

Good to know.  Since you did a metacourse, which doesn't really have any
students of its own, then no student data was attached to you backup
file. 

David, did you confirm whether the Students: None option on the backup
was the answer?

Stan Swank reported this problem and I thought it was just user error also. I backed up and restored my Art 288 with no problems. No student/user data came through. My course was a Meta course with 2 child courses.

Perhaps we'll need to add "unchecking" the choices at the bottom of the backup page, the one that says Users: Course - set it to NONE  and User Files to NONE.

David,  try this change out right away and let me know.  I did not have students last term so my backups were "free" of student accounts.  I hope this solves it or we are in for trouble.

I've verified the problem that Barbara is reporting.  I followed through the instructions on teach step by step, and when I restored the course (into a freshly-wiped test instance of Winter 2007 (which had no users or courses), the student enrollment data was retained, and the student accounts had been created.

I did this three separate times, each time verifying that no student data was included by checking the "None" link on the backup screen.  In the last test, there was no chance that the users came from anywhere else, because there were no users in the system.  This is actually the fourth report I've gotten of this behavior, but in the other instances, I chalked it up to instructor error.  That's not what's happening.  Also, it isn't an artefact of how we import students or do enrollments, because in the last test, I used a completely blank instance--no scripts had been run

I will research this on the Moodle site.  

Any thoughts?  We're going to get a lot of reports of problems with this, I suspect.
