Folks,

We're getting sporadic reports of problems with sending email from Moodle via Moodle's built-in messaging--instructors are occasionally getting "SMTP error: could not connect to SMTP host" when they click send.  I don't think this is a Moodle problem: I think it's most likely an issue with how our outgoing mail gets routed to the Internet.  I've put in a request to change moodle's mail handling so that it works more like teach does (connecting directly to the target mail servers rather than routing it through an outgoing relay here), but I will need to do some testing to make sure that everything is set up correctly.  My guess is that we would probably move to the new system over break.

This is just FYI.  We haven't been getting a lot of complaints, so I don't think a general email is warranted (certainly not until we actually verify that we can make some changes), but I wanted you to be aware in case you get complaints.
