Folks,

Just to be clear vis-a-vis Suzanne Canale's NUR 100 course: all I did was to re-enroll the students in  her class.  There is no script, beyond the standard periodic enrollment script which simply enrolls students in classes.  The same thing would have happened without my intervention, some three hours after I did it.

I bring this up because we need to be clear that there is NO script that will recover student data once it's deleted.  The only reason that student grades in Suzanne's class were still there is that the grades for unenrolled students are maintained in the database.  There would be no way to get data back if the instructor, for example, had deleted the grades, beyond restoring the class from a backup.

Vis-a-vis backups: we do nightly site-wide backups (for the purpose of transferring the site over to a new machine if a server fails), which run at 12:30 AM; we also do course backups starting at 1:00 every morning, and we retain five day's worth.  They typically take several hours.  So if we ever have to restore actual course data, the most recent available source for that data will typically be from between 1:00 to 5:00 AM on the day the data was deleted.
