Instructors,

I have just a couple of items to bring to your attention.

First: enrollments. As some of you know, for the first week of classes, we had allowed students to manually enroll themselves by logging in and clicking on a course. I figured it would allow students who might not have been able to register in ExpressLane a chance to get into the course and at least keep caught up on materials and assignments. In practice, it caused a great deal of confusion when a number of students accidentally enrolled themselves in courses that they weren't registered for in ExpressLane. We have now turned that OFF. By default, students can no longer enroll themselves in any courses: they are only enrolled in a course after they register for it in ExpressLane.

If you like, you can switch this ability back on: just go into your course settings page (click on the course, click Settings in the left-hand menu block), find the "Course enrollable" item, and set it to Yes. Then, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page. Remember, this will allow anyone who can log in to Moodle (pretty much any student in the College) to manually enroll themselves in your course. In almost all cases, there's no need to do this, because students who are registered for your course in ExpressLane are automatically enrolled in your course in Moodle. You can also add individual students manually, if you like: just email for instructions.

(One additional note: if you still have students who enrolled themselves accidentally in one of your courses, you can unenroll them yourself: just click on the Students menu item on the left-hand side, select the student's names, and click the right-pointing arrow. Students, unfortunately, cannot unenroll themselves.)

Second: courses for Winter term. We have added a new category called "Courses under development" where you can begin working on your Winter term courses. When we get closer to the term, we will set up a new instance of Moodle for Winter, where you can restore your courses just as you did for Fall term. (The reason we aren't just making that instance available straight off the bat is that we are still doing a good deal of development work for Winter term to address some of the issues we encountered this Fall.)

Please DON'T use the Fall 2006 category for working on courses for Winter term. Put them in Courses under development instead.

As always, let me know if you have any questions.
