thanks, meredith. so to be clear, if i set an activity at "visible groups" everyone gets
an email (when you say "they can see other groups" do you mean this--that they can
see everyone's email? or will they only receive emails from their group and they can
only see responses on the moodle page itself?

sorry, i know this is convoluted. i just want to be sure that in one activity everyone
participates and in another activity each group remains within itself with not too
many emails flying around (there are 35 in the class).

thanks!
anne

If you talking about Forcing Groups on the Settings page . . .
The group mode can be defined at two levels:
1. Course level
The group mode defined at the course level is the default mode for all activities defined within that course

2. Activity level
Each activity that supports groups can also define its own grouping mode. If the course is set to "force group mode" then the setting for each activity is ignored.

If you want to Force Subscription (meaning they get an email each time someone posts) you set that within the forum editing page, then set Set your Groups Mode. The emails will go out according to your Group choice.
The group mode can be one of three levels:

    * No groups - there are no sub groups, everyone is part of one big community
    * Separate groups - each group can only see their own group, others are invisible
    * Visible groups - each group works in their own group, but can also see other groups

hi everyone,

i have a "groups" question for my moodle course.

i have divided my enrolled students into 6 groups. each week,
i want them to post to each other within those groups. i have
set up these forums with a "separate groups" setting i also
have a question for discussion that i want ALL students to participate in. i have
set these forums up as a "visible groups" setting.

my question is the subscription issue: do i force everyone to be subscribed to both of these forum types,
assuming that the "groups" setting (separate groups and visible groups)
will take care of who gets what messages? or if i force everyone to
be subscribed to the "separate group" forums, does moodle mean
"everyone in the class"?

i hope this question is clear....
thanks
anne
